Tax time 2027

Tax time 2027, prepared across the year instead of in July.

FY2026-27 ends 30 June 2027. The work that makes the return straightforward — matched parcels, cost base, dividend and franking records — happens before then, not after.

Key dates and figures below are general information, not tax advice, and were checked on 28 October 2026 against the ATO contributions caps page. Confirm your own position with the ATO or a registered tax agent.

What changed for FY2026-27

The concessional cap rose to $32,500

The concessional contributions cap for 2026-27 is $32,500, up from $30,000 the year before, and the non-concessional cap is $130,000. Unused concessional cap from earlier years can still be carried forward where your total super balance allows it.

Concessional cap $32,500 for 2026-27, up from $30,000
Non-concessional cap $130,000
Carry-forward concessional contributions still apply, subject to your total super balance
The 50% CGT discount for assets held more than 12 months is unchanged

Capital gains

Every disposal in the year needs a matched parcel

A disposal is a sale, swap, gift or transfer, and crypto counts. For each one the return needs the acquisition date, the cost base including brokerage, the proceeds, and whether the parcel was held long enough for the discount. Sells with no matching buy are the usual reason a CGT figure cannot be finished in July.

Acquisition date and cost base for every parcel sold, brokerage included
Proceeds and disposal date, with foreign trades converted at the rate on the trade date
Holding period per parcel, which decides the 50% discount
Capital losses applied before the discount, and carried forward if unused

Income

Dividends and franking credits are their own record

Franked dividends carry a credit for tax the company already paid, and the credit is declared as income as well as claimed. Distributions from ETFs arrive with an annual tax statement that often lands after the return opens, which is one reason not to lodge on 1 July.

Cash dividends received during FY2026-27
Franking credits attached to each franked dividend
ETF and managed fund annual tax statements, which arrive later than pre-fill
Dividend reinvestment counts as income and starts a new parcel

Questions

When does tax time 2027 start in Australia?

FY2026-27 ends on 30 June 2027. Returns can be lodged from 1 July 2027, though waiting a few weeks lets pre-fill data from employers, banks and share registries arrive first.

What is the deadline for the 2027 Australian tax return?

31 October 2027 if you lodge it yourself through myTax. If you are registered with a tax agent before that date, the agent-lodged deadline extends to 15 May 2028.

What is the concessional super contributions cap for 2026-27?

$32,500, up from $30,000 in 2025-26. The non-concessional cap is $130,000. Check your own position against the ATO before acting on either figure.

Do I pay CGT on shares I did not sell in FY2026-27?

No. Australian CGT is triggered by a disposal, so unrealised gains on shares you still hold are not taxed. Selling, swapping, gifting or transferring a parcel is a disposal, and so is disposing of crypto.

How does the 50% CGT discount work for FY2026-27?

An asset held for more than 12 months before disposal generally qualifies for a 50% discount on the capital gain for Australian resident individuals. Capital losses are applied before the discount, which changes the result when you have both.
