OpenFolio notebooks

Trading Journal

A trading notebook for the decisions behind your portfolio. Study a chart, write the plan before you act, and return to your own words when you review the result.

Plan

Capture the reason for an entry before the outcome is known.

Link

Connect your writing with a recorded trade or crypto position.

Review

Compare what you expected with what actually happened.

Your workspace

Keep a notebook for each part of your trading process.

A broker statement records an execution, but it rarely records the decision behind it. OpenFolio notebooks give that thinking a home. Create a named notebook for a strategy, a market or a period you want to review. Add entry plans, exit decisions, review entries and general notes without forcing every observation to become a trade. The aim is a record you can understand later: what you were watching, what you expected and why the opportunity mattered to you. You can begin with writing and link a trade when you have a record worth connecting.

Named notebooks with optional categories
Entry, exit, review and note types

Symbol and entry-date fields

Chart analysis

Analyse the chart beside your written plan.

The notebook composer places an interactive TradingView chart beside your entry on desktop and above it on smaller screens. Choose the symbol and market, then load the chart when you want to analyse price action. Use the available timeframes, built-in indicators and drawing tools as you write your thesis. Stock charts follow the market you selected; crypto and other instruments need an explicit TradingView exchange and symbol so that the displayed pair is a choice you make. The chart uses its own quote currency, which can differ from the AUD figures in your portfolio.

Before the trade

Write down your thesis and what would invalidate it.

A useful journal separates a reason for taking a trade from the price you hope it reaches. Use the thesis field to describe the setup, evidence or event you are watching. Use invalidation to record what would change your view, and the body for sizing considerations, execution notes or questions to revisit. This structure does not choose a trade for you. It helps preserve the reasoning you had before later price action changes your memory of the decision. You can write about an opportunity without enabling the option that records a trade in your portfolio.

Free-form notes for risk and execution context
Optional tags for recurring themes
Writing a note alone does not record a new trade

Trade records

Link the note to the position you are reviewing.

When you select an existing trade, the composer uses that record's symbol and market so the chart and entry refer to the same instrument. You can also link a crypto holding. If you are entering a new execution manually, the separate Record this trade option collects the quantity, price, date, currency and brokerage. Selecting that option creates an actual portfolio record when the entry is saved; the chart itself does not place orders or send executions to OpenFolio. Use your broker to execute a trade and your source records to check the details you enter.

Link a crypto holding
Explicit opt-in to record a new trade
Orders are placed through your broker

Review and continuity

Return to the plan instead of reconstructing it from memory.

After the trade, use a review entry to compare the original thesis with what happened. Keep the decision process distinct from the eventual profit or loss: a profitable outcome does not by itself show that the plan was followed. The current composer keeps a half-written draft when you close and reopen it during the same visit. Save your entry before refreshing or leaving the page. Saved notebook text belongs to your OpenFolio account, while TradingView drawings and chart settings are not stored with the entry. Use the Performance area alongside the notebook when you want to examine statistical results.

Keep plans and later reviews in the same notebook
Draft text survives closing the composer during the visit
Save before leaving or refreshing

Questions

Clear answers before you sign up.

Can I sign in to my TradingView account inside the chart?

The hosted chart does not connect to your personal TradingView workspace or subscription. Use Open in TradingView when you want to visit that service with your own account.

Are the chart and its drawings saved with my entry?

Your written fields, symbol, market and selected record links are saved by OpenFolio. Chart drawings, indicator settings and the selected chart timeframe are not saved with the journal entry.

Does saving a journal entry create a trade?

A note alone does not create a trade. The composer has a separate Record this trade option. Enabling it and saving valid execution details creates a real portfolio trade.

Is the chart data real-time?

Availability depends on the exchange and the hosted widget. Some markets, including ASX widget data, are delayed. Check the chart's data-status label and use your broker for execution prices.
