A statistical view

Start with the trades and records behind the result.

OpenFolio derives performance views from the trade history you import or record. Closed disposals provide the realised results, while open holdings provide a separate view of current exposure. This distinction matters: an unrealised gain on an open holding is not the same as a completed outcome. The Performance area brings closed positions, capital-weighted return and individual results together so you can review a defined set of records. Use the available financial-year selection to narrow the review, and check that earlier purchases, sales and adjustments are present before treating the result as a complete account of your trading.

Outcome metrics

Read profit factor and expectancy together.

Profit factor compares the total gains on winning disposals with the absolute total losses on losing disposals. Expectancy expresses the average realised outcome per disposal in AUD, taking both positive and negative outcomes into account. Looking at these together is more useful than considering the number of wins alone. A high win rate can coexist with a poor overall result if losses are much larger than gains. Equally, a few large winners can shape a small sample. These are descriptions of the supplied history, not predictions, and the displayed metric definitions and available sample should guide how you interpret them.

Trading behaviour

See how holding time and concentration shape the picture.

Your process involves more than entry and exit prices. Average holding periods help show how quickly positions are being closed, while position concentration describes how much of the open book sits in a particular holding. Where a historical portfolio value is available, stake-size statistics add context about exposure at the time of disposal. Missing historical values are not proof that a stake was small: they limit the available comparison. Use these views to ask specific questions about consistency, such as whether the size of a position matched the conviction and invalidation written in the notebook.

Activity analysis

Look for patterns across securities and trading days.

Activity panels let you review the securities that occur most often in the closed-disposal history, together with their outcomes and holding periods. Weekday analysis groups closing activity by day, while execution-hour views rely on available execution timestamps. Date-only imports cannot establish the hour an order was filled, so timestamp coverage matters. These groupings are a way to inspect your own record rather than a claim that a particular day, time or ticker will produce a better outcome. Start with a pattern you notice, inspect the underlying trades, and compare the context in your journal before drawing a conclusion.

Complete the review

Pair the analytical engine with your original trade plan.

Performance statistics describe outcomes; the notebook preserves what you intended. Use both when reviewing a strategy or a period of trading. First select a result or recurring pattern, then revisit the relevant entries to see the thesis, invalidation and execution notes you recorded. Imported history, incomplete parcels, fees and currency conversion can all affect the result, so correct the source records when something is missing. The performance review does not replace broker statements or the separate tax reporting workflow. A useful review is one where the numbers and the written reasoning can both be traced back to the records you supplied.

Questions

Clear answers before you sign up.

Is this portfolio performance or trade performance?

The Performance area focuses on recorded trades and closed disposals. Portfolio valuation and return trends provide other views of your investments. They answer different questions and can use different denominators.

Will incomplete imports affect the statistics?

Yes. Missing purchases, unmatched sales, incomplete execution timestamps or missing historical prices can limit the analysis. Review the records and coverage before comparing results.

How should I interpret win rate?

Check the definition on the relevant panel. The statistical hit-rate calculation excludes flat outcomes, while some activity or grading views use different treatment. Win rate should be read alongside the size of gains and losses.

Do the statistics predict my next trade?

No. They describe the trade history and available data in your account. They do not establish that a strategy will keep working or that an individual trade will be profitable.
